Kino Teens Serve in Nogales

Kino Teens kicked off their first service project of the year last week in Nogales.

On Friday, Sept. 2 the Kino Teens Club participated in their first service project of the school year when the group traveled to Nogales, Sonora to help prepare and serve the morning meal for migrants who had just arrived in Nogales. Our students served the meal, listened to the stories of migrants, enjoyed the artwork created by migrants at the comedor, and helped prep the afternoon meal. Joanna Williams, the Education and Outreach Director for the Kino Border Initiative, accompanied the group and provided Lancers with information about the immigration process, the need for humanitarian response to the needs of migrants, and the mission of the Jesuits in creating KBI and the comedor. As Pope Francis reminded the world in his homily at the border in February of this year, “This crisis which can be measured in numbers and statistics, we want instead to measure with names, stories, families.”

These cross-border and cross-cultural experiences continue to uplift and humble members of Kino Teens, as they are reminded of the great gifts they have and sometimes take for granted,  and the power that is created when we share ourselves in loving kindness with others.

Kino Teens meets every other Wednesday after school in Room 312. Three more trips to the comedor are scheduled this year, along with other activities. For more information, contact club moderators Kate McGarey-Vasey or Marci Harrington.
