Letter to Salpointe Families

Update: March 3, 2022

Salpointe Catholic Moves to Mask Optional on Friday, March 4, 2022

Dear Salpointe Students and Families,

Thank you for your patience as Salpointe Catholic has negotiated the COVID 19 pandemic since March 13, 2020. Our first priority has been the health and safety of our Lancer community and we are grateful for your partnership and support. Over the past two years, we have prayed for and assisted those who have experienced illness, personal/financial distress or the loss of loved ones. We recognize that our students have suffered academic, social, emotional and spiritual challenges. Salpointe remains committed to overcoming these long term issues together, and we will emerge from this pandemic as a stronger community of faith and learning.

In an effort to mitigate transmission of the virus, Salpointe has required masking, mandated social distancing, encouraged vaccination and hand-washing, and installed ventilation upgrades. Salpointe’s faculty and staff have provided exceptional support for our students, and our nurse has provided extraordinary health care for students, especially in tracking transmission, and in monitoring isolation and quarantine. These protocols have allowed the school to stay open, kept students in the classroom and provided the opportunity for extracurricular activities.

Salpointe made the decision early in the pandemic to follow public health guidelines in order to keep our community safe. We have followed benchmarks established by Pima County Health Department, Arizona Department of Health Services and Centers for Disease Control.

Today the CDC moved Pima County from “high” to “substantial” transmission, based on lower positive case rate (92.24/100,000) and % positivity (9.04%). Salpointe’s most recent COVID case was reported on February 17, mirroring Pima County’s downward trend. This information demonstrates a significantly reduced community-wide and county-wide health risk. Therefore, Salpointe Catholic is revising our policy from mask mandatory to mask optional beginning Friday, March 4.

If Salpointe or our Pima County community experiences a spike in transmission in the future, we will re-examine our mask protocol as necessary.

If your student tests positive or is exposed to COVID, he/she should still follow all public health department guidelines for masking, isolation and quarantine. We encourage vulnerable students, faculty and staff to continue to wear masks and to socially distance. If your student is immunocompromised or if for any reason you would like for him/her to maintain social distancing of six feet in the classroom, please contact your class counselor and we will happily facilitate this request.

Again, thank you for your support. Please direct any health related questions to Mrs. Traci Torres, RN, at ttorres@salpointe.org or any other questions to Mr. Mike Urbanski at murbanski@salpointe.org or Mrs. Kay Sullivan at ksullivan@salpointe.org.

May God continue to bless you and your family.
