Salpointe Faculty Member Named Secondary Education Teacher of the Year
Salpointe faculty member Cecilia Gossler was recently named the 2019-2020 Southern Arizona Secondary Educator of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Gossler is the Director of Salpointe’s Cracchiolo Family Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center. She teaches Engineering 101 and 102, dual credit classes with the University of Arizona, as well as Intermediate and Advanced Engineering . She and her team host the annual STEM Showcase, providing students with the opportunity to present their capstone projects to Salpointe’s STEM Advisory Committee, a group of distinguished corporate presidents, CEOs and engineers, as well as the general community. Additionally, she directs Salpointe’s Engineering Club and Racing the Sun team.
"Cecilia is fully committed to the holistic education of her students. While the discipline she teaches is Engineering, she recognizes the critical importance of encouraging her students to pursue their intellectual, social, spiritual, physical and artistic development," said Kay Sullivan, Salpointe President. "She is the ideal mentor: her professional integrity and ethics are certainly beyond question. She is the ideal role model, balancing her life as a wife, mother, daughter, engineer and teacher."
Prior to her arrival at Salpointe, Gossler graduated from the University of Arizona's College of Engineering and had successful career working as an engineer at Raytheon, National Semiconductor and Burr-Brown. Her experience in and out of the classroom has rapidly grown Salpointe's STEM program, especially with female students.
"Cecilia encourages gender balance in Salpointe’s engineering program, inviting participation by qualified young women as well as men," Sullivan said. "She is an inspirational role model for all of our Lancer students, but particularly for our young women who wish to pursue careers in STEM-related fields."
Gossler will be recognized for her outstanding work as an educator on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Southern Arizona Engineers Week Banquet. ####
