Salpointe alum Mark Wystrach '98 and 'Midland' rock SCHS with free concert for students
Mark Wystrach, a Salpointe Catholic graduate from the Class of 1998, and his Grammy-nominated band, Midland, performed an exclusive concert for Lancer students and staff in the Salpointe gymnasium on October 24th, 2018.
“It’s amazing to come back here and see the same teachers and coaches who have been here for 30 or 40 years,” Wystrach said. “It’s a testament to the community here and to what a great institution it is. It’s the best education I ever got.”
Salpointe’s Student Council and Administration worked closely with Midland to make the once-in-a-lifetime concert happen. After the concert, President Kay Sullivan inducted Wystrach into Salpointe’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, the highest individual honor Salpointe Catholic can give to an alumnus.
The entire Salpointe student body attended the show, dancing and singing along to Midland’s chart-topping hits for nearly an hour. The Lancers were incredibly thankful that Midland would take time out of their hectic schedules to perform at Wystrach’s alma mater.
Following his induction, Wystrach spoke to Salpointe’s students and encouraged them to always follow their dreams and take pride in their community.
“Have a dream, and as my parents taught me, if you’re going to do something, do it right,” Wystrach said. “Once you have figured out your dream, life is like a garden and your circle of influence are like the plants that grow in your garden, so choose your friends wisely. Always choose people who elevate you, encourage you and life you up.”
Prior to the concert, Wystrach and his band members, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson, met with select students for a meet and greet. Wystrach was accompanied by his parents, sister and other family members as he returned home to Southern Arizona for a few days.
