Trevor Werbylo '17 Leads Arizona Golf To Arizona Intercollegiate Title

From ArizonaWildcats.com:

TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona Men's Golf team successfully defended its Arizona Intercollegiate title on Tuesday by beating Arizona State in dramatic fashion to win the event for a second consecutive season. The Wildcats matched a program record by posting a final score of 37-under 280, matching the 37-under score from the 1992 John Burns Intercollegiate and the 2006 NCAA West Regional.

UA's blistering final round of 21-under, 283 in the final round this year's Arizona Intercollegiate was the best single round score in Arizona history, eclipsing the Wildcats' 19-under par score in the third round of the 2000 NCAA Championships.

"Our team was simply outstanding today," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "They demonstrated so many qualities that we talk about to be a championship team. They were patient, resilient, focused, competitive and confident. It was very simply, one of those days where where you just want to get out of their way. Nothing was going to stop this group on their home course and I couldn't be more proud and thankful to be around such a great group. This will serve as great confidence for us as a group and we can use this week to inspire more great golf this spring."\

This marks Coach Anderson's second team win since taking over as coach in 2012.

The team win was just as much an individual success, with all five of the individuals finishing in the top fifteen. This marked freshman Trevor Werbylo's highest career finish, lowest career single round and 72-hole score, finishing 11-under par for a final score of 202. The Tucson native dominated the par-five holes, averaging 4.11, and posted 19 birdies during the two- day tournament.

"It was an awesome couple of days," commented Werbylo. "All five guys contributed and played extremely well. It feels good to defend our title and we are all excited for the rest of the spring."

Senior Ethan Marcus finished tied in 5th, scoring 204 (-9), in his first tournament back since April 2017. Marcus bested his previous single round low score of 70, posting a 67 in the second round, and a 66 in the final round, and his previous 72-hole low score of 213.

After a stellar final round, junior Brad Reeves rose from 25th to finish in a tie for 13th. Reeves had eight birdies in the third round and went three under on par four's to help give the Cats an edge in the third. The Intercollegiate marks his first top-20 finish of the season, and the ninth of his career. He posted a final score of 207 (-6), a new tournament career low.

Junior David Laskin was steady presence, staying in the top 20 throughout the tournament. Laskin's first two rounds were crucial in the win against a tough field, posting two rounds under par yesterday, including a score of 66 (-5) in the second round. This is Laskin's third top-20 finish this season.

Junior Briggs Duce had a strong final round, tabbing three birdies and an eagle on the back nine. He posted a 66 (-5) in the third, a career low single round score. The Arizona native finished to tournament with a score of 210 (-3), setting a career tournament low.

Next up for the Cats is the John Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii, starting February 21st.
