Ed Doherty to be inducted into inaugural AZ Football Coaches Association HOF

From azcentral:

With the Arizona Football Coaches Association and the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club teaming up, Ed Doherty and Paul Moro will make up of the first class of the new, and along awaited, Arizona Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

The two will enter posthumously on Dec. 14 in Scottsdale at the Ed Doherty Award Luncheon that honors the best football player in Arizona during the 2019 season.

"The Arizona Football Coaches Hall of Fame will be more than just the inductions,” said Phoenix Mountain Pointe coach Rich Wellbrock, who is president of the AzFCA, in a release. "It will be an opportunity to inspire others coming up in the sport and take a break at the end of the high school football season to enjoy a moment of reflection on the reasons we chose this lifestyle.

"The inaugural inductees each represent the very core of our purpose and calling as football coaches.”

Doherty, who was head coach at Arizona State (1947-50) and the University of Arizona (1957-58), led Phoenix St. Mary's to back-to-back state football championships in 1967 and '68 and got the Knights to the 1969 state final. Doherty, who died in 2000 at age 81, later led Tucson Salpointe Catholic to a state final appearance. In 1983, he was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.

Moro, who died Jan. 26 at age 66 from complications from strokes while he was battling cancer, led Lakeside Blue Ridge to 13 state football championships. He still holds the state record for most wins with 336. He finished his career at Tempe Marcos de Niza two years ago.
