Serving Students Today

In many ways, students today demonstrate qualities that would have been evident in past years or decades. They can be creative, patient, respectful, determined, dedicated. Their passion and enthusiasm are tied to particular interests or goals they may have for themselves, immediate or long-term. We see students who demonstrate high qualities of character, including trustworthiness, honesty, fairness, caring, and responsibility. Many of these strengths have to do with the principles with which they were raised and the support they have received from significant adults who have provided great examples to model.

A significant difference from previous generations, that is both positive and negative, is the access and use of technology. It certainly is an exceptional tool that has changed the size of the educational window with which students today are able to gather information to analyze, synthesize, and critically think their way through to creative solutions. Yet that same technology has its downfalls, with social media being used to impact self-image and devalue face-to-face communication and interaction with other human beings.

A major issue we find with young people today is dealing with stress. And that stress comes from a number of sources; personal or parental stress to achieve good grades to go on to college, dealing with the stress of balancing academics, social life, and extracurriculars, or the social dynamics of friends and relationships.

Student Services covers a number of departmental areas. Those that directly assist with areas of concern for students specifically are Counseling, Campus Ministry, and Student Council. Student Council provides opportunities for social activities and to develop school spirit. Counseling helps students to de-stress by providing a listening ear, common-sense advice in balancing different aspects of a student's life, and helping sort through personal or family issues that may arise. Campus Ministry, too, provides support, offering that spiritual element that is vital to the Carmelite principles we have held so dear during the decades that Salpointe Catholic has been in existence. Campus Ministry also offers Mass, reconciliation, prayer, Kairos retreats, and counseling. These principles are not only talked about, but they are also hopefully experienced by students through staff members they encounter.
