Students Explore Computer Programming with an "Hour of Code"

Salpointe participated in its first annual Hour of Code, a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org. The event introduces millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming during the first part of December. This year, more than 110,000 events were registered by educators and volunteers in 180+ countries. More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.

This year's theme is "Computer Science for Good," making our world more sustainable. One of the project tutorials helps students create a Plastic Pollution Public Service Announcement; another tutorial stepped students through modeling a Disease Epidemic.

Nationwide, there is an increasing gap between computer science positions and qualified professionals to work in those jobs. Salpointe participates in the Hour of Code to inspire student interest in programming careers. "Our objective in hosting the Hour of Code is to enable and encourage Lancers to succeed in their programming attempts," says STEM teacher, Ms. Ball. "Then we hope those students will continue exploring their own passion projects. Coding may lead them into a career that is in high demand and makes a positive difference in others' lives!"

A total of twenty-six Lancers participated in an Hour of Code at Salpointe; three of them attended both sessions and several brought friends with them the second day. Some students initially came for extra credit points and left with a newfound desire to learn more programming!

Several students asked whether Salpointe will continue to offer an Hour of Code. In response to student requests, we go "Beyond an Hour of Code" with future meetings and Google Classroom resources. This ongoing opportunity will include projects in Python, JavaScript, Blocks, Structured Query Language or Language Independent projects.

"Learning to program is like learning a new language," says Ms. Ball, "an individual won’t be fluent right away. Wherever there is technology, there are tech issues. However, we will explore together!"
