Lancers Make an IMPACT!

On January 30, 1300 Lancers went out to make an impact all across Southern Arizona. Together, Salpointe contributed 9,200 hours of service to the local community. The amount of work they did would have taken one person four and a half years to complete. The 102 service sites covered a broad array of social issues: hunger, homelessness, environment, agriculture, elderly, children, animals, health care, immigration, refugees, music, education and housing. Jessikah Moreno Eller ‘01, Director of Service Learning, is the mastermind behind Salpointe’s IMPACT service day. Some of her favorite projects included a cooking demo and tasting exchange between Syrian refugees and American students, working at Deep Dirt and Ironwood Pig Sanctuary for the first time and serving at St. Francis Shelter. Students were empowered to look beyond their own life experiences and to interact directly with the social issues that face our community.

Here is what we heard afterward:

Words cannot express the gratitude we have for each of you and the incredible students that spent the day with us at Covenant House yesterday. There was a delightful buzz of conversation in the air as stories were shared and new friendships made. We collectively removed barriers to ageism, became inclusive and spent time together learning about each other and from each other's experiences. There were many moving moments including one of our Russian-speaking residents going to her apartment to get a globe to show the students where she grew up. Another group of students helped to clear out our raised flower beds of debris. The residents look forward to continuing this relationship and are very enthusiastic about future visits. Thank you for the opportunity to participate and the uniqueness of the day!”  - Abbie Stone at Covenant House

“I wanted to let you know what a positive difference the Salpointe student volunteers made at Cragin Elementary today and what an absolute joy it was to have them! All of the students were hard-working, showed incredible patience and kindness, were willing to do anything, were polite, and made such a positive impact on our young students. Our Cragin students soaked up their love and attention. It was adorable!” - Wendy Johnson Roe at Cragin Elementary

"I went to San Xavier Co-Op for Impact Day. It was a great experience. There are so many aspects that are relevant for our students and that can help form them to be better persons.  There is the aspect of care for the environment and a balance between humans and the earth. There is the aspect of the historical reality between the natives and the US and the aspect of land. There is the aspect of providing for one's community and helping to care for all within that community. There is the aspect of learning to be self-sustaining and invested in growing our food. Finally, there is the aspect off having our students take a break from technology and to get outdoors and enjoy God's gifts of nature. It was a very rich experience."  - Juan Medina, faculty at Salpointe

Impact day made an impact on me - thanks so much for all your work, and for the opportunity to know our students better. Working with Habitat for Humanity was super, something I hope to pursue further.” - Mara Minwegen, staff at Salpointe
