Letter to Salpointe Families Regarding Coronavirus - 3/11/20

March 11, 2020

Dear Lancer Parents, Guardians and Students,

Salpointe Catholic takes seriously the health and safety of our Lancer students as well as our faculty and staff. While we are hopeful that our Tucson community will be spared from the worsening threat of a COVID-19 outbreak, we are ready to make difficult decisions as needed to keep our community safe.

As we mentioned in our most recent Weekly Peek message on this subject, we initiated a Coronavirus Task Force several weeks ago. We reached out to Dr. Richard Carmona, past parent of four Lancers and the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, for ongoing direction and guidance in this rapidly evolving situation. Dr. Carmona continues to be available to us at any time. We are also in communication with Dr. Bob England, the Interim Director of the Pima County Health Department.

Salpointe’s Coronavirus Task Force continues to meet and to monitor the situation locally, regionally and nationally. Our goal, of course, is to maintain normal operational standards, but we recognize the distinct possibility of having to move to a continuity of operations plan. We are being proactive in our attempt to prepare for any scenario, including a potential school closure and the adoption of distance or home learning. Our teachers are preparing for the potential need to deliver educational content electronically. Please check your MyPointe account to assure that we have your updated contact information, both email and cell phone number(s).

Out of an abundance of caution and in conjunction with public health officials’ recommendations to limit exposure to COVID-19 by modifying, postponing, or canceling large events, we have decided to cancel/reschedule a few events on the calendar:

The all-school Mass scheduled for Tuesday, March 17 has been canceled. In place of the Mass, students chosen by Campus Ministry will visit second period classes and lead Lectio Divina, a compilation of spiritual readings, prayers and meditations. A modified bell schedule 5 will be in effect that day.

The Class of 2024 Orientation has been moved from Monday, March 23 to Tuesday, April 21 at 4:30. We will meet in Foundation Hall immediately preceding our "Future Lancer Celebration," an evening of fun, food and friendship for the Class of '24 originally scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 that same afternoon. Parents will electronically receive the information that would have been presented at the March event.

The Awards Assembly scheduled for March 31 has been moved to Thursday, April 23 at 8:30 a.m.

This is a fluid situation and we will keep you fully informed. Thank you for your support as we face these disconcerting times together.
