A Letter from the Carmelites

I want to take this opportunity, as we begin the most sacred days of our Catholic faith, to wish each of you a very blessed Easter. May the Risen Christ touch your life this Easter so that you desire to be a more faithful follower of Christ. May you become a builder of the Kingdom of God here on this earth, promoting peace and justice among all you meet.

In the words of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, everything is grace. Even in the midst of a pandemic we can look for and experience the hand of our merciful God. The coronavirus has taught us some hard lessons, but amidst the pain and suffering we have also seen our world transformed in many good ways which creates hope.

We have begun to realize that while we worship God under various names or under no title at all, we all worship the same God. We have experienced that while there are divisions caused by the national borders, cultures, language, and skin color, we are all members of the same human family. We see great advancements in science but we know that it is still what we do out of love for other that saves lives.

That is the message of Christ, Risen on Easter. It is an experience of Easter brought home to us very concretely this year. Let this experience be one that we cherish the rest of our days.

As I finish my time as prior provincial of the Carmelites, I take this opportunity to express the gratitude of the Carmelites to thank each of you for your presence in the Carmelite sponsored schools. Whether you are student, parent, teacher or staff, together we have accomplished some great things. These days of closed schools and the implementation of alternative educational methods literally overnight are challenges to us all. But I suspect through it all, we each learned what is really important to us. Perhaps just that lesson makes it all worthwhile.

John’s Gospel for Easter recalls the disciples looking into the empty tomb. John writes, “He saw and believed.” May each of us have that experience this Easter!

Peace,

V. Rev. William J. Harry, O. Carm.
