Easter Blessings

An Easter reflection from Fr. Manu
“Buenos días, Uncle Manu!"
“Buenos días, my niña, how are you?”
“Good, I just had cereal, I am washing my plate now."
“Very nice. What are your plans for the day?”
“I am going to exercise with my little brother."

My niece is four and uses WhatsApp. She uses my sister-in-law’s phone to leave voice messages in the family group. But this time, our conversations, separated by the US/Mexico border, go in the middle of a pandemic that needs no passport to flip the world over.

Why would I use a conversation with my four year old niece to write an Easter message in the middle of a pandemic? Because she is teaching me how to live the Resurrection during this time. While the world is trying to roll over the stone that pushes thousands of people into the grave, we need to remember that Christ’s Resurrection has been given to us. We must live our identity; we are the people of the Resurrection; people called to live beyond death.

I do not think my niece understands what is going on right now, but she has a life to manage, a life of joy, playfulness, and love that has remained unchanged between the walls of their home; she does not give up. She and my two year old nephew keep the house active, joyful, and full of laughter with a never-ending mess. Their WhatsApp messages, accompanied by pictures and short videos, remind me we should never give up because the Resurrection has transformed us; it is in our hearts; we were baptized into it! This Easter is the time to make choices, new choices. The change is real. Catholics around the world should live Easter with a foot set for a better future, a world touched and transformed by death, but above all, touched and transformed by the Resurrection of Christ.

“Buenos días, Lancers, how are you? What are your plans for the day?”
