It is really hard to write my usual happy, uplifting weekly message today, as we struggle to stay connected and engaged, while at the same time enduring the trials of isolation. Yes, we are grateful for the gifts of love, hope and healing that embrace us, but we are simply tired of being without our friends and family.
Our teachers miss their students; our students miss each other! Lancers would love to get back to the routine of bells chiming, daily PA announcements, crowded passing periods, searching for books and assignments in messy lockers, saying hi to Chef Jason as he and the cafeteria ladies serve up lunch, greeting Deans Shinaberry and Flannery as they keep a watchful eye for dress code violations! Today, our lives are not normal and we don’t like it!
I offer two thoughts. This simple prayer by the beloved Carmelite saint, Teresa of Avila, (1515-1582) can bring calm when you are fearful or anxious:
Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing away:
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing;
God alone suffices.
And second: Please know that this, too, will pass. I ask you to be strong, resilient and courageous, and to reach out to others (virtually) rather than focus on your misery! Be the love, be the hope and be the healing for someone else. You will be stronger and happier for it.
With love,
Kay Sullivan
