Letter to Salpointe Community from Kay Sullivan

Dear Salpointe Community,

For seventy years, Salpointe has championed its mission to educate our diverse student population, to affirm the dignity of every person, and to stand up for social justice. These are not empty platitudes. They are the sacred, foundational values rooted in the legacy of our Carmelite charism, calling us to action through prayer, community and service to others. We will not waver in this mission.

Today, in 2020, we are in the midst of a global COVID-19 pandemic with 6,500,000 cases and 387,000 deaths. Our strong economy has collapsed and over 20,000,000 Americans are unemployed. Now in this same moment we find ourselves in the midst of coast to coast protests against racism sparked by the tragic death of George Floyd, protests occasionally exploited by those inciting destruction and violence. The pandemic, our nation’s economic demise, and rampant racial injustice are stark reminders of our fragile existence. And so once again, Salpointe pauses to focus on our mission. We stand united with those who respect and honor the dignity of every person, who seek justice and peace. We stand in solidarity with those who stand up to end racism, violence and hatred.

And so we pray. Lord, teach us to raise our moral voices in prayer that transcends the cacophony of society’s indifference, racism, hatred and injustice. Then, and only then, shall we all breathe freely.

God of Heaven and Earth,

you created the one human family

and endowed each person with great dignity.

Aid us, we pray, in overcoming the sin of racism.

Grant us your grace in eliminating this blight

from our hearts, our communities,

our social and civil institutions.

Fill our hearts with love for you and our neighbor

so that we may work with you

in healing our land from racial injustice.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
