Rev. Msgr. John Lyons '65 Bestowed With Papal Honor of Chaplain to His Holiness

Salpointe Catholic High School congratulates Father John J. Lyons, Class of 1965, who was bestowed with the papal honor of Chaplain to His Holiness with the title of Reverend Monsignor in July 2020.

"I am honored and humbled,” Msgr. Lyons said. “I didn't expect it. It came out of the blue. I was literally speechless. It is a wonderful honor."

Msgr. Lyons is a member of the Salpointe Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame, a Seton Award recipient and a super fan of Lancer athletics. His impact on Salpointe and the Southern Arizona community is expansive and beyond measure.

"The number of responses in congratulations were overwhelming,” Msgr. Lyons said. “I heard from parishioners at Saints Peter and Paul, Immaculate Conception in Yuma, and Salpointe Catholic High School. I heard from people all throughout my life."

Msgr. Lyons said he has been influenced by many of Tucson's great religious leaders throughout his life, including Fr. Robert Dominga, Msgr. O'Keefe and Bishop Moreno.

“Congratulations, Msgr. Lyons! I wish this were not happening in the midst of a pandemic, but I pray that you, your parishioners and I, together, can have one heck of a celebration when this is over so that we can express our great gratitude to you,” said Bishop Edward Wisenburger in a congratulatory video message.

Bishop Wisenburger continued, “
I hardly need to take note of his devoted ministry as pastor, canonist, exemplary administrator on the diocesan level, and co-worker to his brother priests as the basis for this honor.”
