Salpointe's Plan for Reopening Fall 2020

UPDATE, 9/3: To best accommodate our families, students will be divided up alphabetically for hybrid learning starting Monday, September 21. Students with a last name beginning with A through L will be on campus Mondays and Tuesdays. Students with a last name beginning with M through Z will be on campus Wednesdays and Thursdays. We will do our best to accommodate students with different last names living in the same household. Please contact Jeff Mounts at jmounts@salpointe.org with questions.

Dear Lancer Students and Families,

We are pleased to announce that, provided COVID numbers in Pima County continue to trend downward, Salpointe will begin a hybrid model of On Campus Learning on Monday, September 21.

This plan includes on campus student orientation on September 16 and 17. More information to follow.

Please review the information below and feel free to email info@salpointe.org with questions.

We look forward to seeing your students soon!

SALPOINTE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
FALL 2020 HYBRID REOPENING PLAN
SEPTEMBER 1, 2020

Salpointe Catholic tentatively plans to open in a hybrid, on campus model of education on Monday, September 21. Administration is relying on benchmarks and metrics as provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Pima County Health Department as we make this decision. If the risk of COVID should shift and become significantly worse, we will re-evaluate this decision.

Hybrid Learning: Hybrid learning means that half of the student body will participate in a modified block schedule for On-Campus instruction on Monday and Tuesday while the other half will be in synchronous digital mode or At-Home Learning. The second half of the student body will be On-Campus on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday all students, those choosing the will learn remotely yet synchronously while the campus is thoroughly disinfected.

Before initiating this hybrid model, Salpointe will hold “back to school” in person orientation sessions on September 16 and 17 for each of the four classes, exact schedule to be determined. If you plan to have your student return for On-Campus Learning, please sign the COVID-19 release in MyPointe if you have not done so already.

Salpointe will continue to provide five day/week At-Home Learning to students/families with vulnerabilities. Students who select full time At-Home Learning will tentatively be able to shift to On-Campus learning on the following dates that coincide with Salpointe’s grading periods: October 12, November 2 and December 1.

This hybrid model will require that Salpointe implement the following health and safety protocols on campus in order to mitigate COVID risk.

Masks: Salpointe will require all persons on campus to wear masks covering the mouth and nose area (at least two layers of fabric with no racial, sexual, political, inappropriate messaging). Students should bring their own masks on a daily basis.  Shields, in addition to masks, are recommended, but not required.

Temperature checks and symptom checklist:  Salpointe will use no-contact, infrared thermometers to take temperatures and review symptom checklists with all students and visitors every day.  The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus.
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue, muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
Social Distancing: By opening in the hybrid model, with half the students on campus on any given day, Salpointe will be able to effectively provide for six feet of social distancing in classrooms, hallways and lunchrooms. Locker access, lunch periods, hallway traffic, passing periods and before/after school free time will be restricted and/or staggered.

Hand Washing and Hand Sanitizer: Salpointe will provide the time and facilities necessary for students to wash and/or sanitize their hands between classes. Passing periods will be ten minutes in length, allowing for students to practice frequent hygiene. Classrooms will be supplied with hand sanitizer.

Campus Sanitization: Salpointe will clean public areas multiple times each day, including student desks, restrooms, door knobs, etc. The school has installed enhanced air filtration systems and facilitated the addition of outside air into every classroom and office (shown to be efficacious to reduce any infectious viral load); installed plexiglass shields in high traffic areas such as the Student Services counter, Foundation Hall point of sale stations, Click Library and Spirit Store counter.

On-Campus and At-Home policies: The educational experience for both On-Campus and At-Home learners will be signature Salpointe. Academic expectations for all students will be parallel, no matter their method of learning. Attendance will be taken and handbook standards will be enforced. Swivl Robots and Android tablets with high resolution cameras and microphone technology will allow us to continue to livestream daily lessons.

We will continue our distance learning standards to provide consistency while in this hybrid model. Both faculty and student accountability has been adapted for students learning from home, and will continue to work well with students in the classroom. In our hybrid model, Salpointe Catholic will continue to operate on an ABC Schedule, but 4th period will meet daily to assist with lunch periods.

Mondays and Wednesdays will be Schedule A
Tuesdays and Thursdays will be Schedule B
Fridays will be Schedule C

During weeks that do not have five days, the schedule will be adjusted accordingly and with notice. For the week of September 21 - 25, Salpointe will follow an ABABC schedule and this pattern will continue until further notice.

  • The schedule gives faculty and students increased class time throughout the week and builds in time for students to get extra help from teachers, class and college counselors, learning lab specialists, deans, tutors, etc.

Lunch: The school will employ two lunch sessions during 4th period, which will rotate daily.  Seating in and around Foundation Hall will allow for social distancing.

Mass schedule:  Mass will be held during the students’ scheduled Theology classes. For example, all first period Theology classes will gather in the gym, socially distanced, to celebrate the liturgy together

COVID Response: Salpointe will follow the Arizona Department of Health Services’ “Release from Isolation and Quarantine” guidance recommendations for quarantine, discontinuation of isolation precautions and home isolation based upon a person’s symptoms and clinical testing, per italics below.

CDC and Arizona Department of Health Services do not recommend a test-based strategy to discontinue isolation. For people that previously tested positive for COVID-19 who remain asymptomatic after recovery, retesting is not recommended within three months after the date of symptom onset for the initial COVID-19 infection.

● If a person is symptomatic and awaiting** COVID-19 test results:
○ Stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until results are available. If results are delayed, follow guidance for “symptomatic and tested positive for COVD-19.” Once results are available, follow the recommendations below based on results.

If a person is symptomatic and tested positive for COVID-19 by PCR or antigen testing, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until:
○ At least 10 days* have passed since symptoms first appeared; AND
○ At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers; AND
○ Other symptoms have improved.

If a person is symptomatic and tested negative** for COVID-19 by PCR or antigen testing, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until:
○ At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers; AND
○ Other symptoms have improved.

If a person is symptomatic and has not been tested** for COVID-19 by PCR or antigen testing, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until
○ At least 10 days* have passed since symptoms first appeared; AND
○ At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers; AND
○ Other symptoms have improved.

If a person is asymptomatic and awaiting** COVID-19 test results
○ No isolation is required while waiting for test results. Take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Once results are available, follow recommendations based on results.

If a person is asymptomatic and tested positive for COVID-19 by PCR or antigen testing, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until:
○ At least 10 days* have passed since specimen collection of the first positive COVID-19 PCR/antigen testing while asymptomatic. If symptoms develop, follow guidance for symptomatic and tested positive for COVID-19.

If a person is asymptomatic and tested positive** for COVID-19 by serology (test detecting the presence of antibodies in the blood):
○ No isolation is required since there is a low likelihood of active infection. Take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

If a person is asymptomatic and tested negative** for COVID-19 by PCR, antigen testing, or serology:
○ No isolation is required. Take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

If a person has other non-compatible symptoms and has not been tested for COVID-19, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until
○ At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers; AND
○ Other symptoms have improved.

*A person who had severe/critical illness or is severely immunocompromised should
● If symptomatic, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until:
○ At least 20 days have passed since symptoms first appeared; AND
○ At least 24 hours have passed since last fever without the use of medicine that reduces fevers; AND
○ Other symptoms have improved.
● If asymptomatic, stay home away from others or under isolation precautions until:
● At least 20 days have passed since specimen collection of the first positive COVID-19 PCR/antigen testing while asymptomatic. If symptoms develop, follow guidance for symptomatic and tested positive for COVD-19.

Outside of these criteria above, extension of isolation is not routinely recommended if an individual is retested within three months of onset of symptoms or date of first positive test while asymptomatic.

**A person who had known close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case should quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure to the case regardless of negative tests results or illness where no testing was performed. However, if they test positive for COVID-19 by PCR or antigen testing, they should follow the relevant isolation guidance. Healthcare workers and critical infrastructure workers should follow guidance that includes special consideration for these groups. If you are a healthcare worker or critical infrastructure worker, please follow-up with your employer or HR for specific guidelines. In addition for people previously diagnosed with symptomatic COVID-19 who remain asymptomatic after recovery, quarantine is not recommended in the event of close contact with an infected person.

Recent Updates to Guidance

The following changes were made to the above guidance:
● Added guidance on not using a test-based strategy, extended isolation (i.e. 20 days) for individuals with severe/critical illness or that are severely immunocompromised, quarantine guidance, and glossary of terms.
● Changed recommendations for serial testing of asymptomatic individuals and reduced time from fever to 24 hours from 72 hours.
● Removed serology from recommendations for diagnostic tests (i.e., PCR or antigen testing)

Salpointe Catholic families/students should notify the Attendance Office and the Health Office regarding a positive test. The Attendance and Health personnel will share this information with those who “need to know” in order to allow for contact tracing by Pima County Health Department.

At-Home Learning Student Expectations

When students are participating in full or partial At-Home Learning, they should conduct themselves as if they were in the regular classroom on campus. Participating in all scheduled classes through Google Meets is essential to staying connected to your teachers and classmates. Students are expected to be present and active for the entirety of the class.

Salpointe recommends the following protocols for successful At-Home Learning:
Students will need a working Salpointe Chromebook or device that can access their Salpointe.org account. The Technology Department will assist students who need repairs or replacement. Contact Marc Hermes at mhermes@salpointe.org or 520-547-9357.

Create an environment that is quiet and free from external distractions.

Work at a desk or table. Be seated in a chair that provides for attentive posture, as if in the classroom.

Dress appropriately. Casual dress, like what students would wear for a free dress day at school, is okay. That means clothing needs to be within guidelines of decency and good taste. No cut-off, ragged, or torn garments may be worn. Attention to appearance can be a motivating factor in getting yourself mentally prepared for learning.

Be on time for class sessions.

Upon entering Meet, mute the mic. Keep the video camera on during class if requested by the instructor.
Follow classroom rules.

Stay attentive. No other social media devices should be present in work space areas. Use headphones to listen in to class if it helps to avoid distractions.

Be a good listener. Take time to listen to what the teacher and classmates are saying. Type questions or contributions in the chat box and wait to be called on. Think before speaking and stay on topic. Comments should be clear and appropriate to the conversation. Only one student should contribute/talk at a time.

Remember: no one is anonymous. Look into the camera when speaking. Be mindful of facial expressions, gestures and tone of voice. Practice RESPECT... always! If necessary, teachers have the discretion to disconnect students from the class, which will count against participation grades.

As it would be on campus in a classroom, the teacher dismisses students. Stay connected until such time.
Follow directives/deadlines for submitting work. Students may not receive credit for missing or incomplete assignments.

Teachers will enforce late work policies as written on the syllabus. Have a clear understanding of late work policies for each of your teachers.

Parents/Guardians should contact the attendance office at school (520-327-1990 or attendance@salpointe.org) to report any absences due to illness or other reason. Should a student be absent from class without a parent call, Salpointe’s Student Services office will follow up to assist with student and family needs.
