Athletics

Spectators at Winter Sports
As our winter sports begin (basketball and soccer), please understand that the recommendation from the AIA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee is not to allow spectators at these events. We will adhere to this recommendation and if the health metrics improve, we will make adjustments. In the meantime, we are very fortunate to have cameras in our gym and stadium, and all of our home games can be viewed live streamed through the NFHS Network.

Log onto www.nfhsnetwork.com. Type in Salpointe Catholic at the top of the page. It will take you to our page and have a list of our events that are being live streamed. Click on the game you want to watch and subscribe. It is $10.99 per month or $69.99 for the year. We look forward to watching our student-athletes compete!

College Counseling
Congratulations to our seniors who continue to hear about college acceptances! Seniors, please keep sending in a copy of your college acceptances, denials and deferrals as well as academic scholarships to college@salpointe.org. The subject line should be: First initial, Last name, College letters (EX:  S. Brown college letters). Once we receive copies of your college decision letters, we’ll add them to this list: SCHS College Acceptances 2021.

Counselors are having short meetings with juniors in theology class to launch their college planning. A reminder to juniors to join the Future Plans, Class of 2022 Google Classroom.

The College Board announced this week that they will discontinue the SAT Subject Tests and the optional essay section of the SAT. The SAT will still be given as usual. Some colleges have turned to "test optional" admissions and so they don't require the SAT or ACT. Other colleges still require one of these tests for admissions or to be considered for academic scholarships. Mrs. Ossowski recommends that our juniors take both the SAT and the ACT before school starts in August, just to be sure that they are not losing out on any opportunities.

The United States Naval Academy has opened applications for their two summer programs: Summer Seminar for current juniors, and Summer STEM for grades 9, 10, 11. Both offer a one week on-campus experience and a glimpse of life at the Naval Academy. Cost is $650 for Summer Seminar and $900 for Summer STEM. Need-based scholarships are available for the program fee and travel. Details at USNA Summer Programs. The deadline to apply is March 31.

Student-athletes in all grades interested in playing their sport in college should check out our handout on Playing Your Sport in College. Here is the coursework required for Division I and Division II. Many athletes need the third or fourth year of language study, and fourth year of science to fulfill the academic requirements. The NCAA has also created a webinar helping you through the academic eligibility process. You can watch that HERE.

Applications are now open for the Joaquin Bustoz Math-Science Honors Program this summer at Arizona State University, open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. This FREE program provides motivated students an opportunity to begin college level math studies and connect with like-minded scholars from around the state. Minimum GPA 3.25. Must have completed Algebra II before the summer, with grades of B or higher in all math and science classes. Deadline to apply is February 15. Details HERE.

Sophomores and juniors, this is a great time to explore possible colleges. Attend one of the eight National College Fairs sponsored by the National Association for College Admissions Counseling between January 21 and May 2, 2021. These are the fairs that most colleges attend. There is no cost to participate, but you need to decide which colleges to visit ahead of time. Here is a GREAT two minute video on how to get the most out of the NACAC fairs. And here is the college fair Quick Start Guide
