Salpointe's Academic Committee Welcomes New Members

The Academic Committee of the Board of Directors works with administrators to ensure that Salpointe's curriculum meets the school's mission as a holistic, college-prep high school in the Carmelite tradition of prayer, community and service. Salpointe's Academic Committee welcomes six new members and looks forward to learning from their expertise.

Bruce Bayly
holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Princeton University and a BA in Mathematics from Cambridge University. He is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona and also taught at New York University. He has been influential in the community outreach through the physics bus and in EPICS.  His research has focused on fluid mechanics, magneto hydro dynamics, magnetic field generation in stars and planets and math education research. By invitation of Phil Lacovara, Bruce has engaged in our STEM showcase.

Martin Dufwenberg holds a Ph.D. from Uppsala University in Sweden. He is Professor of Economics, University of Arizona Eller College of Management and Director of the  Institute for Behavioral Economics. He previously taught at Stockholm University and Bocconi University. His research focuses on game theory to explore topics in behavioral economics. He is married to Karen and they have two Lancer sons, Fredrik ‘19 and Martin ‘11.

Brian Luce, DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) and MM (Master of Music) from the University of North Texas and BME (Bachelor of Music Education) from Henderson State University, He is a Professor of Flute at the University of Arizona and a Yamaha Performing Artist. Dr. Luce has performed as principal flute for many highly regarded orchestras around the world, with performances broadcast throughout the United States. He is acclaimed as an “authoritative soloist,” and his CD, Music of the Superpowers: Sputnik, Spies and the Space Race, was lauded by the American Record Guide. Bruce is married to Dondi and they have a Lancer junior, Henry.

Rafael Meza, M.Ed., is the Senior Director of Inclusive Excellence and Community Development, and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Arizona. He previously served as Director for Undergraduate Recruitment, overseeing domestic freshman and transfer recruitment programs. His current role fosters inclusion initiatives, diversity awareness, family engagement and community development opportunities for Enrollment Management. Rafael is a Salpointe alum, class of ’87. He is married to Kristyn and they have two Lancer daughters, McKenzie ‘18 and Logan ‘23.

Sonia Shiri holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc.(Master of Science) from Edinburgh University and BA from the University of Tunis in Tunisia. She is an Associate Professor, the Middle East Language Programs Coordinator and the Director of the Arabic Flagship Program at the University of Arizona. Previously, she coordinated the Arabic program at the University of California Berkeley, taught Arabic at Oxford University and held a research fellowship at the Center for Women and Gender at Stanford University. She has a Lancer son, Ramsey ‘20.

Aida Samuel is the Sales Manager of Tetakawi, the leading provider of shared-services to foreign manufacturers operating in Mexico. With a B.S. Degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arizona, she has over 35 years of international business experience with key management assignments in Mexico and South Africa. Aida served as president of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic School Board while her son Nicolas attended the school. Nicolas is a 2020 Salpointe graduate. Aida currently serves as President of the Diocese School Board. In addition to being a strong supporter of Catholic education, Aida volunteers and serves on the Board of Sister Jose Women’s Center. She is passionate about reaching out and helping the homeless women in our community.
