Summer School
Salpointe will run in-person Summer School this year. Session 1 will run from May 24 to June 10. Session 2 will run from June 14 to June 30. The Summer School Resource Board is now available in MyPointe with a link to a Google Form to sign up. Additional information on financial aid, class schedules and more can be found on the Summer School page on our website.
 
Student COVID Positives
Salpointe has had two additional student positive cases since we last reported case numbers on February 5. We are working to keep our community safe and we appreciate your support. Click here for more information. We ask you to insist that Lancers follow prescribed health and safety protocols. Please honestly report all COVID exposures and confirmed cases to Salpointe’s health office at kkohnke@salpointe.org or 520-547-9395.
 
Mental Health Meeting For Students
Sunnyside High School student Gisselle H. is inviting you to join other Tucson high school students for a mental health Zoom meeting hosted by Jovenes En Accion. This event is a place where you have a safe space to talk about your mental health and how COVID-19 has affected your life.
 
During this meeting you will be able to speak openly about your feelings, learn healthy coping mechanisms, and find other youth who are going through the same situation. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 23 from 4:30-5:30pm. For more information and to register, click this link. We hope you will join!

Last Chance for Yearbook Photos
If you have not had a yearbook photo taken, please contact Rembrandt Photography at (520) 797-9200 to set up an appointment to have your photo taken. Students must have an appointment before visiting the studio. Your photo must be taken before Rodeo Break (February 25, 2021) to be included in the yearbook.

Shakespearean Monologue Competition
Congratulations to the 32 participants in Salpointe's All-School Shakespearean Monologue Competition! All 32 competitors worked on their monologues as a project for their English class and were nominated by their teachers to participate in the All-School Competition based on the quality of their performance. This year, students filmed themselves reciting their monologues and submitted a video link, which our team of judges watched remotely to evaluate.  
 
We are pleased to announce our top five performers: Reese Tyburec '24, Ivana Jimenez '24, Esteban Hinojos '24, Larizah Plaza '24 and Lucas Frank '24. Congratulations, Lancers! Ms. Tyburec and Ms. Jimenez will be representing Salpointe at the virtual Regional Monologue Competition on March 6.

The first day of the spring sports season is Monday, March 1. Please email the specific coach asking for information related to their sport. All participants must have a completed physical packet (found on the Salpointe website under Athletics) uploaded to Register My Athlete before they can participate.

Character Counts
The Lenten Season began this week with Ash Wednesday and the Character Commentaries focused on that theme.  On Monday, Sophia Baker recalled the practice of giving up something for Lent but offered a challenge to do more that reflected a generosity of heart (The Season of Lent).  Wednesday morning, Kaitlyn Medvec talked of the example of Jesus in choosing to sacrifice for us and the importance of making choices for others in our life (The Lenten Journey). College Counseling
Students, stay strong in your schoolwork! Keep up on assignments and prepare well for tests. You can do this! There are lots of people at Salpointe to help you be your best; let us know how we can help you. Here is a great article with 5 Tips to Create the Ultimate Study Schedule. Every one of us could benefit from a solid plan for learning. And here is a good article on Practical Ways to Reduce Test Anxiety. Check these out!
 
Junior Announcements
Counselors have met with juniors to talk about college plans, both in their theology classes and during after school meetings this past week. Any juniors who missed these conversations should watch the recordings posted in their Google Classroom (Future Plans Class of 2022). At this time of the semester, we recommend that juniors explore possible college majors, research colleges, sign up for SAT and ACT tests and talk with parents about paying for college
 
Juniors are invited to participate in one of several four-day Kick-Start! College Application Essay Workshops this summer. The workshop, run by veteran English teacher Mr. Tim Evans, is designed to help students tell their unique story in college essays. There is individualized writing instruction and college application coaching in an enthusiastic environment that promotes engagement, reflection and creativity. The cost for 16 hours of instruction is $485. Choose from: May 24-27, June 1-4 and August 2-5. Students can register now to hold your place at:  KickStart Registration 2021. 
 
Juniors are encouraged to set up an individual appointment to meet with one of our college counselors to discuss college ideas and plans. Link to request an appointment is in your Future Plans Google Classroom
 
Senior Announcements
Seniors attending an Arizona university: Salpointe is hosting an exclusive Arizona University Check-In just for you! This is a chance to talk with the admissions counselors from our in-state colleges about your next steps including, new student orientation, placements tests, financial aid, final documents, housing and more. Please join our virtual session to hear about what to be working on right now and answer your individual questions. The meetings will be open for about an hour after school on March 1 through March 3. Click on the Arizona University Check-In for the schedule and meeting links for UA, ASU, NAU, Grand Canyon, Catholic U, and Pima College. No need to pre-register.  
 
Congratulations to our seniors who continue to hear about college acceptances! Seniors, please keep sending in a copy of your college acceptances, denials and deferrals as well as academic scholarships to college@salpointe.org. The subject line should be: First initial, Last name, College letters (ex: S. Brown college letters).We are tracking that information. Once we receive copies of your college decision letters, we’ll add them to this list: SCHS College Acceptances 2021.
 
Seniors, is your attention on paying for college? First step is to complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov. You can find details about financial aid resources at Paying for College Resources
 
Seniors who have committed to attend a Catholic university in Fall 2021 could be eligible for a $1000 scholarship. If your chosen university is a member of the National Catholic College Admissions Association, you should complete the simple scholarship application. The deadline is April 1, 2021. Details at NCCAA Scholarship.  
 
Seniors with a military parent or guardian are invited to apply for one of the scholarships offered by the Davis-Monthan Spouses Club. This wonderful organization has awarded more than $90,000 in scholarships in the past three years alone, and this year will give out scholarships with $1,000 minimum. Applicants must be a dependent of an active duty, retired or deceased member of the U.S. Armed Forces, or a full-time National Guard or Reserve (active or retired). Deadline is March 5. Seniors planning to study engineering or computer science can now apply for the Lockheed Martin STEM Scholarship Program which awards $10,000 to 200 recipients, renewable for four years, along with summer internships with Lockheed Martin. Students will be selected based on academic record, financial need, leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, a statement of career and educational goals, unusual personal or family circumstances. Preference given to those under-represented in the field of engineering as described in the application. Deadline is April 1 but you must allow four weeks advance notice for a letter of recommendation. 
 
Seniors, have you seen this sentence in your college acceptances?  “Please note that your admission is subject to verification of your official, final high school transcripts.” If yes, please do NOT panic. Don’t request a transcript right now. Once you pass all of your courses and actually graduate from Salpointe, we will send out your final transcript to the college you will attend. This happens automatically in early June 2021. Final transcripts are not available until you graduate
 
College Information Sessions
Join admission representatives from Lewis & Clark College (Portland, OR), Macalester College (Minneapolis, MN), Rhodes College (Memphis, TN), Trinity College (Hartford, CT), and University of Richmond (Richmond, VA) for a virtual conversation. These selective, liberal arts colleges in city settings have small classes, opportunities for research and internships, vibrant cultural centers and an urban environment. The event is tomorrow, Saturday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m. Register at: Metro 5: Liberal Arts in the City.

The Claremont Colleges - Claremont McKennaHarvey MuddPitzerPomona and Scripps - share a unique collaboration and connectivity that influences academics, athletics, and student life. The “5Cs” are located across the street from one another, so students can attend a small, tightly-focused college even as they enjoy the benefits of a bigger, multi-faceted campus. Join colleges in Arizona and the region for a Virtual College Fair this spring. This is a chance to connect with colleges from around the area and learn about their academic programs, scholarships, and opportunities. The National Association for College Admissions Counseling invites all students and parents to explore colleges without leaving home! Sign up now for one of the NACAC Virtual College Fairs between February 28 and April 10. Most will be general, and several will focus on the Western U.S., STEM, and Visual and Performing Arts. More than 500 colleges will offer Zoom sessions. Register in advance at NACAC College Fairs.

This virtual college tour resource includes links to virtual tours for over a thousand colleges. It’s a great quick-reference resource that links to schools’ official YouTube channels, plus CampusReel, YOUniversityTV and YouVisit pages for hundreds of colleges.

Summer Opportunities
Looking to expand your horizon this summer? Dive into some of your areas of interest with one of the virtual or in-person summer programs sponsored by Arizona State University. There are many great options from the Barrett Summer Scholars program to programs in business and entrepreneurship, dance, science research, writing, leadership and more. Some are free and others have a modest cost. Details at: ASU Summer Programs.
 
The National High School Game Academy, held by the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, is accepting applications for their six-week virtual program. Take classes in all aspects of gamedevelopment including art, software development, audio, gamedesign, production and narrative. Students complete several gamedevelopment projects as well. Must be 16 years old with an unweighted GPA of 3.0. This is a rigorous, highly reputable academy. Details at: CMU Game Academy.
 
Stanford’s pre-college programs challenge students with advanced subjects rarely taught in high school. The virtual programs are taught by Stanford professors and graduate students and offer financial aid, so apply early. The deadline is March 10, 2021. Details: Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies. Note: Attending this summer program has absolutely NO impact on getting admitted to Stanford. 
 
The United States Naval Academy has opened applications for their two summer programs: Summer Seminar for current juniors, and Summer STEM for grades 9, 10, 11. Both offer a one week on-campus experience and a glimpse of life at the Naval Academy. Cost is $650 for Summer Seminar and $900 for Summer STEM. Need-based scholarships are available for the program fee and travel. Details at USNA Summer Programs. The deadline to apply is March 31. 
 
Future film students, Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles has opened applications for their four-week summer program in FilmProduction: Social Impact Filmmaking. The program is virtual this summer. Students (current juniors only) will earn three college credits as they create stories that are socially responsible and gain an understanding of the filmmaking process. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2021. Details: LMU Summer Film Program

Spirit Store

The Spirit Store will begin accepting orders for Letterman Jackets on March 1! We have jackets size XS through XL available in the store for students to try on before submitting their order. The deadline to submit your order is March 25. Your decorated Letterman Jackets will be available for pick up beginning April 15. Please email mwood@salpointe.org or come into the store to place your order. The cost is $250. Payment must be made at the time you place the order.

Uniform polo shirts are always in stock, and we add new items to our Clearance rack daily. We will close at noon on Wednesday for Rodeo Break and re-open on Monday. Have a safe and happy break!
