Salpointe Weekly Peek - September 3, 2021

Happy Friday, Lancers! Please see the many important announcements below.

Get Involved at Salpointe
As a Lancer parent, you are a treasured part of the Salpointe community and we encourage you to get involved on campus. Interested in selling tickets or working in the snack bar at athletic events? How about helping at a college fair? Would you enjoy working on the Foundation Gala or Lady Lancer Brunch and Blessing committee? These are just some of the opportunities available. If you are interested, please complete this volunteer form. We’ll be in touch as needs arise. Thank you for your support.

Learning Lab Volunteers Needed
Salpointe's Learning Lab is in need of volunteers to help support students needing accommodations during testing and/or supervise peer tutors providing aid to students.

You would be making a great contribution to the Salpointe community by giving students a little bit of your time once a week. Volunteers would sign up for two-hour time slots once a week and would be in charge of overseeing the Learning Lab, assisting peer tutors as they help students, supervising students’ testing, and occasionally reading aloud exams to students who have that accommodation for their learning.

As a volunteer, because you may be working one-on-one with students, you are required to have fingerprint clearance and/or Diocesan Clearance. Prior experience in the field of education is preferred but not required.

If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of our students and would like to be included on our list of volunteers, please contact Brenda Griffin (bgriffin@salpointe.org). Thank you!

Sacrament of Confirmation
We at Salpointe encourage all Catholic young adults to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. While Salpointe Catholic has offered the Sacrament to our Lancers since the 1980’s, the rightful place for reception is the student’s parish. It should be part of the lifelong process of building a strong and dynamic relationship within parish life.

At the direction of Most Reverend Edward Weisenburger, J.C.L., Bishop of Tucson, Salpointe will no longer offer the Sacrament of Confirmation, effective immediately. Students interested in being Confirmed should contact their parish to register for the parish Confirmation program. If an interested student is not a member of a parish, he/she can register for Confirmation at St. Cyril Church, a local parish under Carmelite leadership. Please call 520-795-1633 to register no later than September 7 in order to participate in St. Cyril’s Confirmation program this year. The St. Cyril Confirmation preparation meetings take place on Wednesday evenings, starting on September 8. Confirmation will take place in November.

Vaccine Raffle Drawing
All students who have uploaded their completed vaccination card to myPointe by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 3 are automatically entered to win the grand prize of $1,000 cash or one month of paid tuition. The winner will be announced at halftime of the football game and be emailed on Monday. To upload the completed vaccine card, the student's parent/guardian must log into myPointe and click the "Checklist to Review" banner across the top to get started.

Student Services

Community of Concern Meeting
Salpointe’s Community of Concern is an integral part of our substance abuse prevention and issues education program.  Parents/Guardian presentations are held to provide important information on teenage issues, substance abuse and to improve communication between each other.  Parents/Guardians are required to attend two meetings over a four year period. Once during the freshman/sophomore year of their student and once during the junior/senior year.

Our first presentation this year will be held on Friday, September 10. The location has been moved to the Corcoran Theater (in the Stearns Center for the Arts). This is a special opportunity for freshmen parents to attend with the Freshmen Dance being held on the same date and during the same time frame of 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. You can drop off your student for the dance, attend the presentation and pick up your students afterward. Please submit this RSVP Link to let us know if you will be joining us for the evening.

Our teachers and counselors recognize the long-term effects of the last year and half on our students. We are seeing an increase in academic, social, and mental health concerns. We want to share those observations with you and make sure that we are working together, both at school and at home, to help our young people readjust to full-time school.

The topics for the evening will cover;
  • Recognizing and assisting our students who are struggling academically, socially or mentally
  • New Counseling and Campus Ministry programs that will help address those issues
  • How counselors, teachers and parents can best work together
  • Resources for parents
Please submit this RSVP Link to let us know if you will be joining us for the evening.

Character Counts
This past week, Character Commentaries during homeroom focused on the meaning of character. Stella Fina laid out varying definitions for character before focusing on character as it relates to integrity (What is Character?). On Thursday, Omar Monreal talked about how a person can discover their true character and what to watch for in building it up (Discovering True Character).
