Salpointe Weekly Peek - September 24, 2021

Happy Friday, Lancers! Please see the many important announcements below.

Letter from President and Principal
Dear Salpointe Community,

We appreciate your diligence in helping to protect our community while we work to deliver the signature Salpointe experience to our Lancers.

We need to inform you that we have had six students test positive for COVID this week, for a total of ten cases over the past six weeks. Eight of the ten cases are unvaccinated students. Our Health Office is working with the Pima County Health Department on contact tracing: apparently four transmissions occurred off campus, the fifth is unknown and the sixth transmission (between two students) may have occurred on campus and is, therefore, considered an outbreak. An outbreak is defined by PCHD as “≥ 2 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases among students or staff with onsets within a 14-day period, who are epidemiologically-linked, do not share a household, and were not identified as close contacts of each other in another setting during standard case investigation or contact tracing.” While PCHD is technically classifying this as an outbreak, the health department does not recommend additional action since our protocols are in compliance with public health recommendations.

We are confident that we can keep our community safe by enforcing mandatory masking indoors, by encouraging vaccination, by sanitizing public spaces, and by maximizing air filtration and ventilation systems.

Please see this press release by PCHD today:  PIMA COUNTY, Sept. 24, 2021 – Pima County co-authored a study published today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that shows universal mask wearing in Arizona K-12 schools considerably reduces the likelihood of a school-associated COVID-19 outbreak. The investigation included 999 K–12 public non-charter schools in Pima and Maricopa counties, finding that schools without a mask requirement were 3.5 times more likely to experience a COVID-19 outbreak.

Overall, Pima County schools have had 2,274 cases and 76 outbreaks since school started.

Our top priority remains the safety of our students, while maintaining transparency with all constituent groups.

Character Counts
This week our Character Commentaries continued on the topic of respect, using the word as an acronym. On Wednesday, Stella looked at the second letter “E” which stands for esteem. Esteem is having a healthy regard for another and that includes oneself… self-esteem (The First "E" in Respect). Omar dealt with the letter “S” on Thursday, which stands for sympathy. Sympathy is more than just passively  feeling sorrow for another. It involves being active in helping someone in a difficult time (The "S" in Respect). Follow the links to read the full commentary!
