Salpointe Weekly Peek - October 8, 2021

Happy Friday, Lancers!

This week, our new spiritual tradition continues with a reflection shared by Kelly Fleming Pelletier '88, Salpointe's Alumni Council President.

A Reflection on Social Distancing
One of the brand new terms that has entered our daily conversation is "social distancing." It is shorthand, as we know very well, for the practical physical precautions that we all need to and must take in order to protect ourselves and others. I'd humbly suggest though, that we use the term itself sparingly, if at all. Language is a powerful shaper of thinking. And the very last thing we need right now, is a mindset of mutual distancing.
We actually need to be thinking in the exact opposite way. Every hand that we don't shake must become a phone call that we place. Every embrace that we avoid must become a verbal expression of warmth and concern. Every inch and every foot that we physically place between ourselves and another, must become a thought as to how we might be of help to that other, should the need arise. It is obvious that "distancing", if misplaced or misunderstood, will take its toll not only upon our community's strength and resiliency, but upon the very integrity and meaning of our spiritual commitment.

Let's stay safe. And let's draw one another closer in a way that we've never done before.    - Yosef Kanefsky

The Quest - Class of 2025 Retreat

During the journey King Arthur, his Knights and Ladies will lead our freshmen to explore the Virtues of Knighthood and how they are relevant to our lives today. Students do not have to register for this activity. We suggest that students leave their backpacks at home that day. There will be no regular classes for the class of 2025. Please bring a water bottle.  Lunch will be provided. It is strongly suggested that students leave their cell phones at home.

Parking Lot Traffic Reminders
Traffic associated with student pick up continues to be challenging. It will remain so until construction is completed at our Mountain gate entrance. To alleviate the congestion, we encourage you to consider the following: picking your student up on the east side of campus (Cherry Ave.) or on the south side of campus (Copper St.). There are multiple locations where you can pick your student up efficiently. In all cases, we encourage not picking your student up any earlier than 15 minutes before daily dismissal time. We appreciate and thank you for your patience.

Character Counts
This week was nationally recognized as CHARACTER COUNTS Week. Omar Monreal gave an introduction on Tuesday that included a couple of quotes to reflect on (Beginning of Character Counts Week). On Wednesday, Stella Fina looked at the idea of virtue as a choice and related the story of St. Maximilian Kolbe who gave his life for another in the death camp at Auschwitz during World War II (True Virtue). Thursday, Omar talked of integrity being a habit that takes time to develop and is never a partial commitment to doing what is right (Integrity is a Habit). CHARACTER COUNTS Week wrapped up with a couple of items. Students heard the song Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw while heading for first period. Stella and Omar then read the poem What Will Matter by Michael Josephson as part of the morning announcements (What Will Matter). See the opening quotes, commentaries and full text of the poem by following the links!
