Community update regarding fire - August 1, 2022

August 1, 2022

Dear Lancer families,

Thank you for your support and patience as we recover from the July 17 fire. We are very grateful for your notes, phone calls and prayers. We are a resilient community and we know that we will get through this together and emerge even stronger.

We are sending out a press release (text below) today and want you to hear this news from us:

Salpointe Catholic High School was notified on Sunday, July 31 by Tucson Police Department that the July 17 fire is suspected to be arson and that an arrest has been made. The suspect, 26-year old Forrest Harris, has no known affiliation to Salpointe and the motive is undetermined at this time.

The fire destroyed the 700 English wing of the school and caused smoke, water and electrical damage to several other campus buildings. Expenses related to the fire are expected to be in the millions and insurance will cover remediation and replacement costs. Salpointe is grateful that no one was injured.

Restoration began immediately and is ongoing. The six classrooms destroyed by the fire will be temporarily replaced by modern modular classrooms. The school will be approved for safe occupancy prior to the first day of school on August 15.

Salpointe is grateful for the outpouring of support and assistance from the Lancer community, Tucson community and the Tucson police and fire departments. We look forward to welcoming our 1290 students and providing them with the signature Lancer experience. Kay Sullivan, Salpointe’s president, stated, “As we have for the past 72 years, Salpointe will continue to lead the way in secondary education and serve our community of students, families and alumni with faithfulness and dedication.”

We have a favor to ask: Salpointe lost about 250 lockers in the fire. We have ordered new lockers, but they won’t be ready for use until about the third week of school. We are looking for 250 sophomores, juniors or seniors to volunteer to “give up” their lockers until the new ones arrive. If your Lancer is willing to help out, please complete this form! Thank you!

Locker assignments will be available on myPointe on Friday, August 12. Freshmen and transfer students will have time during orientation to move into their lockers and are also welcome to do so between 7:00 and 7:45 a.m. on Monday, August 15. Sophomores, juniors and seniors will be able to move into their lockers starting on Tuesday, August 16 at 7:00 a.m.

We look forward to another great year here at Salpointe!

Gratefully,

Kay Sullivan   Ardemis Martin
