Salpointe girls volleyball earns championship match berth

Salpointe Catholic girls volleyball earned their second straight upset win to advance to the 4A state championship match.

The sixth seeded Lancers (32-8) beat No. 2 Prescott 3-0 (25-23, 25-7, 25-15) on Tuesday in Phoenix. Salpointe will face No. 4 Phoenix Greenway (39-3) in the championship match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Phoenix Mountain Pointe.

Greenway beat Canyon Del Oro (25-12) 3-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal match.
 
Salpointe also upset No. 3 Flagstaff on the road in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The Lancers have won six matches in a row.

Salpointe junior outside hitter Alanna Duarte had three aces and 12 kills and senior outside hitter Maggie Schepelmann had nine kills and ten digs.

Last year the Lancers lost in the state semifinals.
 
In the 5A bracket at Tempe Marcos de Niza, No. 2 Sahuaro (25-3) lost 3-2 to No. 3 Phoenix Sunnyslope and No. 4 Ironwood Ridge (22-19) fell to No. 1 Peoria Centennial 3-1
