Salpointe Names Annual John Glinski and Carlos Valencia Award Winners

Salpointe recently honored and remembered two very special Lancers who left us too soon at the annual Heroes Assembly - John Glinski '68 who succumbed to cancer in 1966 and Carlos Valencia '06 who lost the battle to leukemia in 2004.

Junior Myles H. received the John Glinski award, commemorating the life of John Glinski '68. Glinski was a Salpointe student with tremendous athletic potential who battled cancer his freshman and sophomore years, eventually succumbing to the disease in May of 1966.

The Glinski Award is presented annually at the Heroes Assembly to an exceptional junior football player who shows academic promise. He has firm moral convictions and possesses a thirst for life, possibly overcoming obstacles in his own life.  Finally, the winner of the John Glinski Award displays determination as an exemplary student athlete.

"Myles is a kid of great integrity and values. He overcame a devastating knee injury and is without question one of our best young players. He represents all that is good in a student athlete," said Myles' nominator.

Junior Sean M. was honored with the Carlos Valencia Humanitarian award, commemorating the life of Carlos Valencia '06. Carlos was a young man of compassion, love, generosity and simple living.

While a student at Salpointe he fought the battle against Leukemia. Carlos persevered with humility, optimism, courage and faith. During the course of his illness over 6000 people were tested as possible bone marrow donors while the Tucson community searched for a match for Carlos. Unfortunately, a match was never found but many others with the disease received bone marrow transplants and their lives were saved. Carlos died early in his junior year on August 8, 2004.

At the annual Heroes Assembly a member of the junior class who possesses great courage and strength especially in difficult times is honored in memory of Carlos.  Much like Carlos, the recipient goes about life in a selfless manner, understands the true meaning of “community” and inspires us to think beyond ourselves.

Sean's nominator shared, "Sean has been a gentle-hearted and kind soul who quietly strives to do his best. I can't think of anyone who embodies Carlos' spirit more."

Both these Lancers model the characteristics of John and Carlos and represent the true meaning of being a Lancer.
Congratulations, Myles and Sean!
