Q & A with former Salpointe hoops standout Shawn Soelter
Q & A with former Salpointe standout Shawn Soelter. Soelter helped guide the Benedictine Eagles (Illinois) to the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship game last year. The Eagles are picked to win the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championship and D3hoops has them ranked sixth in the nation.
Q: Tell us about your experiences in the NCAA tournament. Was it everything you thought it would be?
A: Last year’s NCAA tournament run was something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Being able to host three tournament games on our home floor in front of our fans was really special. On our way to the Final Four in Salem, VA we flew into Raleigh Durham and got the opportunity to practice at Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke University.

Q: This is your senior year. Can you tell us about the benefits of going to a small school?
A: The thing I enjoy most about going to a small school is the fact that you’re not just a number. The small class sizes allow for more interaction with the professors. At Benedictine, a majority of the students that live on campus are fellow student athletes so you are able to build relationships with a lot of people that may be harder to come by at a bigger school.

A: I am studying Business Management and Organizational Behavior.

Q: You guys are ranked 6th preseason. What are your expectations?
A: Our expectations coming into the season are pretty straight forward: win our conference and win a national title.

Q: Have you gone to any high school games out there and can you tell us the different style of play?
A: High school games out here are a little more physical and fast paced.
