No. 3 Salpointe beat No. 14 Metro Tech 6-1 in 4A first-round action Tuesday night. Sophomore forward Alfonso Cabrera scored a hat trick for the Lancers.
No. 8 Catalina Foothills beat No. 9 Thunderbird 4-1 to record the other 4A victory for a team from Southern Arizona. The Falcons finished last season ranked 43rd in Division II and now find themselves in the quarterfinal round one year later.

Zane Wade scored two goals against Thunderbird to pace the Falcons.

“Last year was very disappointing,” the senior midfielder said. “We broke our streak of making the playoffs but we are all hungry this year. We want to get that ring. We have a mindset to work harder and this just feels good.”

Conner Cosgrove and Ryan Whitney also scored for Catalina Foothills while David Carrillo scored for Thunderbird.

In other action, Tucson fell in the 6A bracket and Buena and Mountain View lost in 5A play. No. 16 Amphitheater gave No. 1 Coronado all the Dons could handle but fell 3-2. Catalina Foothills will take on Coronado on Saturday in the quarterfinal round.

Salpointe will host No. 6 Washington in the other 4A quarterfinal scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. Read more.
