Tucson High, Salpointe Catholic, The Gregory School highlight high school hoops brackets

February frenzy was in full effect Sunday, when the Arizona Interscholastic Association unveiled the boys and girls basketball state tournament brackets.
The Class 6A portion of the bracket saw just one Southern Arizona team make the postseason: the Tucson High girls team.
 
The Badgers earned the No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 seed Gilbert Perry on Tuesday. Tucson is 24-2 and used balanced scoring to win 13 straight heading into its first-round matchup.
 
The Badgers have six players who score at least five points per game, with senior guard Alize McCormick leading the way at 11.7.
 
“They really work together as a team. … There’s just a great balance in scoring,” Tucson High coach Annette Gutierrez said. “It makes us difficult to defend because any two or three of our players could have a great night.”
 
Tucson teams are well-represented in 5A.
 
On the girls side, Marana earned the No. 5 seed, Cienega ended up at No. 7, Ironwood Ridge slotted in at No. 9, Sahuaro received the No. 11 seed and Mountain View is No. 16.
 
Marana is 21-4 and riding an 11-game winning streak. Junior guard Alyssa Perez averages 15.1 points per game.
 
On the boys side, Sierra Vista Buena earned the No. 5 seed, Cienega received the No. 6 seed, Cholla ended up at No. 7, Sahuaro is No. 10 and Mountain View is No. 12.
 
Six local teams made the 4A bracket.
 
Salpointe Catholic’s boys received the No. 2 seed, Catalina Foothills is No. 3 and Rio Rico ended up at No. 6.
 
“We’re excited for tournament basketball where the next game is the biggest game of the year,” Salpointe coach Brian Holstrom said.
 
“I think Southern Arizona can make a lot of noise in the 4A and 5A tournaments.”
On the girls side of the 4A brackets, Pueblo earned the No. 5 seed, Canyon Del Oro received the No. 9 seed and Rio Rico ended up with the No. 15 seed.
 
The 3A portion saw a handful of Southern Arizona boys and girls teams have their postseason dreams come true.
 
On the girls side, Pusch Ridge earned the No. 5 seed, Tanque Verde settled in at No. 14 and Empire slotted in at No. 17. On the boys side, Sabino earned the No. 13 seed, Empire is No. 21 and Tanque Verde is No. 22.
 
The 1A portion of the has The Gregory School at the No. 1 seed in the boys bracket and the No. 3 seed in the girls bracket.
 
The Hawks went 26-1 in the regular season and are riding a 19-game winning streak.
 
Senior guard Nick Rosquist is the state’s top scorer, averaging 28.9 points per game. Read more.
