Fr. Urban’s Instruments Donated to Salpointe Band

Advancement Department
In 1957 Fr. (Urban) William Welch, O.Carm., came to Salpointe to teach religion and was quickly assigned to the fledgling band program. The first year, with only 16 players and no uniforms, Salpointe marched in the Tucson Rodeo Parade playing, “Anchors Away.” From those humble beginnings, the band grew in size and strength as Fr. Urban’s wand kept waving. He was known to stop students in the hallways and talk them into playing an instrument. With no music credits to his name, Fr. Urban took classes at the University of Arizona until he had sufficient credits to be able to give his students credit for their classes. Music classes were held after school and eventually the band grew to 85 members. He was key in the establishment of the marching band, concert band, pep band, jazz band and the “Midnighters,” Salpointe’s first dance/jazz band. His direction and tenacity
brought into school history the “Hungry 14 of ’58” which became one of the finest marching units in the state. Fr. Urban and his musicians of 1957-1966 are the foundation of Salpointe’s award-winning music department.

Fr. Urban passed away in March of 2015. His brother, Mr. Lloyd Parenti gave Salpointe Fr. Urban’s coronet, trumpet and case (total value at $3,200) to be loaned to students as needed. Each year the instruments are to be returned to the music department to be loaned out again when needed.
