Class of 2017 Senior Class Gift Increases Spiritual Identity on Campus

Advancement Department
Each year, Salpointe seniors work together to create and fundraise for a way to leave their mark on the Salpointe
campus. Last year’s class was integral to the transformation of the sophomore patio into the John Malley, O.Carm., Kindness Patio (see page 4 in Salpointe Today) and the Class of 2017 followed suit with a project close to the heart of Salpointe’s mission.
With the goal of enhancing the formation of student spirituality, the Class of 2017 raised money and created permanent, handmade Stations of the Cross which have been placed throughout campus as a symbol of Lancer unity through faith and growth through Kairos.

"When designing our senior class gift we wanted to create a gift that expressed the Class of 2017’s genuine love and gratitude for Salpointe. Ultimately, we wanted a gift that would impact all Lancers and be a visual reminder of our Lord’s unfailing love,” said Bella Nowland ’17, Senior Class President. “We have been so blessed by all those who contributed their time, prayers and donations which allowed us to make our vision a reality. My prayer and hope for the Stations is that they will act as a reminder to all Lancers that Jesus suffered the ultimate sacrifice for us out of love and that it is in our own giving that we receive."

The seniors were blessed by the efforts of artist and Salpointe parent, Jennifer Furrier, who helped turn their dreams into reality by collaborating with them to design, create and install the beautiful mosaics adorning each Station.

“The mosaic Stations of the Cross turned out beautifully. From the main pieces depicting Jesus, Mary, Simon and others, to mirrored halos, wood grain on the cross, and the small details of many hundreds of hearts and crosses along with Kairos symbols,” said Furrier. “The students were diligent in the details, with all the cutting, painting of the tiles, grouting and adhering each mosaic to a huge boulder. It all paid off, and will impact the faith journey of Lancers for years to come.”

Furrier donated countless hours and materials to the project, and a majority of the Stations are complete and installed on campus thanks to her vision and direction. The remaining Stations will be complete in the fall as part of an IMPACT service learning project. “The idea for this project was simply spectacular and the individual work by the seniors involved was incredible,” said Ernie Duarte, Chief Operations and Finance Officer. “For the Class of 2017 to give this gift to Salpointe is so meaningful.”

“I jumped at the chance to be involved in making mosaics for the Stations of the Cross at Salpointe, such an important symbol
of our Catholic faith," Furrier said. "Over the last few months I have spent hours contemplating Jesus in each station; the many emotions from fear at being condemned, to the love Jesus felt for His mother, to the physical pain as nails were being driven through His hands and feet. This project has been a pilgrimage for my faith.”
