CHARACTER COUNTS! Program
In 1992, a summit was hosted by the Josephson Institute, parent organization of CHARACTER COUNTS!, in Aspen, Colorado. A group of leading ethicists, educators, and youth-service professionals convened to develop a common language of core ethical values that transcend religious, political, and socioeconomic differences.
This group identified universal values, later called the Six Pillars of Character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. A national character education movement was established called CHARACTER COUNTS! Today, this program has become the most widely implemented approach to character education.
Salpointe Catholic High School is a member of the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition and has integrated the Six Pillars of Character into our school program in support of our Lancer Values and the Gospel message. This integration is seen in varying ways; weekly commentaries read during homeroom announcements, teachers utilizing posters in the classroom, references made within lesson plans, the Six Pillars being the benchmark goals for the disciplinary program.
