Alumni spotlight: Mark Pickering '10

Mark Pickering ’10 attended Pima College to pursue his Associates Degree in Business Administration. It was always his dream to work for Disney and during his first semester in college he applied for the Disney College Program in Walt Disney World. Mark was accepted for a 7-month Main Entrance Operations internship at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2011. “I absolutely loved the job, the people, the culture, I was tempted to move and finish college in Florida.” However, toward the end of the program, Mark’s father, Scott Pickering, passed away. He returned home to help take care of his family and went back to Pima, putting himself through community college by working at Target. He started as a cashier and worked his way up to supervisor.

Later in 2012, Disney announced they were acquiring Lucasfilm and Mark knew he had to get back to Disney! He returned for a second Disney College Program in 2014 to again get his foot in the door. Mark graduated from Pima in the Fall of 2014 and transferred to the University of Arizona. He later applied for and was accepted into Eller
College of Management. At the same time he left Target after working there for five years and went to work at the Forbes 5 Star Ritz-Carlton Resort at Dove Mountain where he learned of the gold-standard of hospitality.

In 2017, Mark graduated cum laude from Eller with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Shortly after graduation, he accepted the position of Guest Experience Manager in Merchandise at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. “It’s a dream come true for me because not only do I love Disney, but I love Star Wars and one of the shops I oversee is Tatooine Traders the Star Tours Shop and soon Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge (the new Star Wars theme park) which will be opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios next year. I couldn’t have made it to this point in my life without the support of God, my friends, family, and especially the support of my mother Christina Diaz.”
