Chandi McCright ’15 has come full circle, returning to Tucson to help lead the University of Arizona Pomline as a coach. A Salpointe alumna, former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, and featured cast member on Netflix’s American Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Chandi brings a wealth of professional experience, a deep love for her alma mater, and a passion for mentoring young dancers. In a recent interview, she shared insights on stepping into this role, working alongside her longtime mentor Adrienne, and guiding a roster of seasoned veterans and a record 12 rookies.
About her new role at UA
How does it feel to be back in Tucson coaching at your alma mater?
It feels so surreal! I have such a deep love for the U of A, Tucson, and this amazing team of girls. Being able to be a part of something I hold so near and dear to my heart is the best feeling.
What’s it like working alongside your former coach now as a colleague?
So much fun and so easy! I have known Adrienne since I was about 11/12 years old. She is family and someone I look up to and have and continue to learn a lot from.
What are your top goals for the Pomline program this season?
To make the girls feel as comfortable as possible. We have an amazing group of vets and 12 new rookies (like the most ever!). Making them feel comfortable and at ease is a major goal of mine.
How do you plan to blend tradition with your professional dance experience?
U of A is all about tradition but also we gotta keep up with the times. We will always keep the tradition alive while adding new flare here and there!
What’s been the most surreal or full-circle moment since stepping into this role?
First day of pom camp! I stepped into the studio with the team and felt like a freshman again! I know exactly what everyone is going through and I’m finding my confidence as well!
About her Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader experience
What initially inspired you to audition for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders?
I knew I didn’t want to give up dancing but didn’t really know how to get to the next level. I talked with Adrienne when I was a sophomore and she pushed me to talk to the recruiter for DCC since she reached out to Adrienne about me. I chatted with the recruiter, went to take a prep class and fell in love!
How did your time at Salpointe prepare you for that leap?
Simone Jolivet at Salpointe was the one who truly pushed me to the next level. She sees potential in everyone, fully embraces it, and helps each person reach their goals. She was there for my freshman year tryout at the U of A and has supported me ever since.
Can you share a favorite memory from your seasons on the DCC?
Oh that’s a hard question! I would say the top two memories would be getting to meet, chat, and film with Dolly Parton, as well as getting the privilege to go on a USO Tour to Korea.
What was the biggest challenge you faced during your time there, and how did you overcome it?
I think moving over a weekend and being on my own, no family or friends, for the first time was the biggest challenge! Being a small fish in a big, big pond is so scary but it helped me gain some confidence in myself.
How did being part of such a high-profile team shape you personally and professionally?
I think it made me want to grow into the woman I am today quickly and find that maturity. My two best friends who I met my rookie year were older than me and took me under their wings. I will forever be grateful for them because they showed me the woman I want to be.
Connecting past and present
In what ways has your professional cheerleading experience influenced your coaching style?
I think with my professional cheerleading experience as well as living a good chunk of my life on TV, I know how to approach certain situations and personalities and bring it all together. I know how to be the person someone can lean on and talk to no matter what. I want the current team and those in the years to come to know that I will always be their biggest fan and support them no matter what.
What lessons from the DCC do you want to pass on to your UA Pomline athletes?
It’s okay to have bad days and not feel okay all the time. College and your 20s are full of learning and growth, and I’ve experienced it all. I want them to know I’ll always be there for them, offering support and guidance during this time of change.
If one of your students wanted to try out for a pro team, what advice would you give them?
Go for it!!! It’s so scary, I know, but you will regret it if you don’t try. Do your research on the team and area so you know what to expect and how to try to match the style! They aren’t looking for a perfect barbie they are looking for you!!
Looking back, what would you tell your college self about the journey ahead?
Buckle up! It will be full of ups and downs but you will be so proud of yourself. You are stronger than you think, I promise!
Misc.
What song always gets you hyped before a performance?
We listen to a lot in the locker room but I personally love anything Tate McRae. She makes me feel like I am that girl!
If someone made a movie about your cheer/dance career, who would play you?
I don’t know if she dances and I know she’s taller than me but I absolutely love Zendaya!
