Salpointe's Class of 2019 Earns $20M in Merit Scholarships

The Lancers celebrated graduation on May 18.
Salpointe Catholic High School is proud to announce that the 281 members of the Class of 2019 were accepted to 164 of the finest colleges, universities and military academies. Twenty-eight Lancers graduated as Salpointe Scholars with GPAs of 4.0 or higher, and 20 will participate in athletics at the college level.
Salpointe continues to be a high school of distinction due to the high achievement of our Lancer students in the classroom, athletics and the Southern Arizona community,” said Principal Sr. Helen Timothy, IBVM.
Salpointe’s Baccalaureate Mass was held May 18 at St. Augustine Cathedral, followed by a commencement ceremony at the Tucson Convention Center. Graduation speakers were seniors Joseph Kennedy, who will attend the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Honors College, and Preston Valles, who will attend Boise State University.

“Fellow graduates, our differences foster understanding,” Kennedy said during his Graduation speech. “Salpointe promotes acceptance through its diversity to which every member of this Class of 2019 has contributed. Looking out into this sea of people I have come to know, I see talent, I see brilliance, I see faith, I see passion, and I see character. Salpointe has provided us with an intangible skill: human interaction. Four years ago, I walked through those Foundation Hall doors alone, and yesterday I walked out a part of something larger. We are so much more than a group of individuals.”

In addition, the following awards were presented to the Class of 2019:
  • Carmelite Medal Awards – Benjamin Hall, attending the Honors College at Arizona State University, and Carmen Rivero, attending the University of Arizona.
  • John Hughes Spirit Award – Miranda Quiroz attending the University of Arizona.
  • Outstanding Male Athlete – Majok Deng attending Pepperdine University.
  • Outstanding Female Athlete – Annie Kosinski attending the University of Arizona.
  • Gary Gillette Most Inspirational Athlete of the Year Memorial Award – Grace Kaufman-Fuller attending Boise State University.
  • Outstanding Fine Artist, Performance – Benjamin Pitot attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
  • Outstanding Fine Artist, Visual – Sophia Smith attending Skidmore College.
Salpointe commends the Class of 2019 for their achievements and wishes them all the best as they take what has been learned at Salpointe on to college and beyond.
“We are proud of their accomplishments at Salpointe and know that they will embrace the challenge to excel at the next level,” said President Kay Sullivan.
