Harris Twins Share God's Love

Sisters Kathleen and Colleen Harris '57 have been assisting the Benedictine Sisters as they move from their beautiful convent of 78 years. While the Harris twins were in Tucson, they have also worked at In the Arms of St. Francis, a shelter for homeless men and women. The following is a reflection from their staff about the impact Sisters Kathleen and Colleen have had on their ministry.

The greatest gift we have been graced with – hands down – are the nuns from the local Benedictine Monastery. In the Fall 2017, I learned that the monastery was closing soon. I contacted Sister Joan, the Abbess. She invited me to visit. The conversation was beautiful, and I left with several pieces of religious art for the shelter. Sisters Kathleen and Colleen – both Sisters of Carondelet assigned to assist with the closing and as the shelter’s liaison – assured me that they would send more as we approached the closing date, February 27th. They were right! The closer we approach the closing date, the more gifts we receive from the monastery. The gifts to the thrift shop are incredibly beautiful. One sister donated her own hand-painted “Seven Corporal Works of Mercy,” – most appropriate to our work with the homeless – which now hang on the dining room wall surrounding a print of Rembrandt’s “Prodigal Son.”

Most appreciated, however, is the very presence of the two good sisters in the thrift store and the shelter. These godly women glow with God’s love and compassion. At times when I gaze into Sister Colleen’s face as she ministers – and I do mean MINISTERS – I see the face of God. Her whole being and deportment is a ministry in and of itself. She is a living tabernacle, a home to God’s grace, mercy, and love. The shelter staff – most unchurched in a traditional way – love these two angels. To watch these big, tough guys melt as one of the sisters takes his face in her small hands and blesses him is an extraordinary sight to witness.
